Sketches and writings from the garden + other stories

In and Out of the Garden

Published in 1991 by Workman Publishing, New York and in Great Britain by Sidgwick and Jackson

I had been actually working on it as sort of vague idea for some time, inspired by old gardening books including The Old English Garden Books by Eleanour Sinclair Rohde and another old gardening book I had found called A New Orchard and Garden. It was when I went to New York that I met my agent Ted Riley and he took me to see the US publisher Workman and left my portfolio for them to look at. The day I left New York I went to collect it and they commissioned the book straight away asking me what I would like to do first. I lived in London then and didn’t have a garden as I lived in a flat. I would grow things in pots on my balcony but I’d always loved gardens and visited them as a child. I had a very clear idea of what it would be and worked closely with my editor at Workman. It was first published in the US and then Sedgwick and Jackson published it in the UK. The only other publisher was Japan as it was difficult to translate as the text was integrated with the artwork.
